Loved-to-Pieces . . . with ZACHARIAH OHORA!

Good morning! Mr. Pig here. I'm so very excited to welcome author-illustrator Zachariah OHora to the Cottage! The kidlitosphere is buzzing about WOLFIE THE BUNNY, his new book with Cottager friend and favorite Ame Dyckman. We can't wait to get our hands on a copy when it releases on February 17th!

In addition to illustrating Wolfie, Mr. OHora is the genius behind the picture books No Fits, Nilson, My Cousin Momo, and Stop Snoring, Bernard!

Influential children's librarian and School Library Journal blogger Betsy Bird said this of OHora: "Clearly the man knows where to find the picture book sweet spot. A visual feast as well as a treat to the ear, this is a book that’s going to find an audience no matter where it goes."

So what did this rising star in children's books love to read as a child? We asked the question—and Zachariah told us one of the sweetest Loved-to-Pieces stories EVER!
Read on!

"When I was a kid, my Grandmother lived in the woods of Connecticut and she had a giant wicker basket full of toys and books. The book I reached for every time was Clyde and Wendy Watson's Father Fox's Pennyrhymes.

The rhymes were silly and I loved staring at all the little foxes, seeing what they were wearing and what each on of them was doing. And how about those trees?! All those leaves?! It was a book of poems but also kind of a comic book from another century.

My cousin and I loved how mischievous the foxes could be. Like this Aunt's house they just come in and trash. That definitely appealed to my six year old boy self. Especially in a house that as much as were allowed to do what we wanted, there were a line that couldn't be crossed (like playing with Grandpa's pipes)!

But my absolute favorite spread, both the poem and the artwork, was this one. My cousin and I would make my Grandmom read it over and over and we would roll on the floor with laughter at the thought of someone eating the buttons of their shirt!

I never had an actual copy of the book myself. So it was a special treat to see it at my Grandmother's. I don't know if it was the setting (her house was very country style) but combined with the old fashioned dress of the foxes and their little world, I assumed this book was some kind of relic from the 1800s instead of a National Book Award Nominee for 1972!

Years later, I would recite this poem to my two young boys Oskar and Teddy and they would giggle with laughter just as my cousin and I did thirty-odd years ago.

I came across a copy at a bookstore in New York and it reminded me that I should Google Wendy & Clyde Watson.

Imagine my surprise when I found out that Wendy was still alive and well. Apparently the book came out in the 1970s and not the 1870s as I had presumed. I was further surprised to find out that Clyde Watson was her sister! Not her husband as I had presumed as well.

The biggest shock was realizing that we followed each other on Twitter! THAT Wendy Watson?! It couldn't be! I emailed her that evening, fanboyed out on her, told her all about how I recited the button poems to Oskar and Teddy.

That Christmas, a package came in the mail with a copy of Father Fox's Pennyrhymes signed by Clyde and Wendy."

Quote of the Week

"When a kid finishes a picture book, a bit of the tiny universe they just explored stays with them in this one."

BOO!

Velcome to the Little Crooked Cottage’s Haunted Halloween Bash!

I am your host. . . Count Pigula! Mwa-ha-ha-ha!

Don’t mind the cobwebs. I went a little overboard this year because nearly all the spiders RSVP’d yes. Itsy Bitsy, Charlotte and Miss Spider are already here, hanging around. Only one spider sent his regrets--I forget why. Something about being very busy.

Any-hoo. . .

I like your costume! Are you hungry? Please help yourself, we have so much food! Everyone brought treats. The Girl and Cub brought cookies, of course. We have twelve pounds of banana pudding from the monkeysPony brought feather-free macaroni. Oh! And someone brought a sushi platter! Very fancy. I’m not sure who it was, but my money’s on Fang, the shark.

Speaking of. . . apparently, the Big Bad Wolf thought it would be just hilarious to bring a huge tray of Pigs in a Blanket.

Look at my face. Am I laughing? No, no, I'm not.

Ah, well. I won't let it dampen my spirits. How can I? I just LOVE Halloween!

You know what is funny? Zombelina and Vamperina Ballerina came dressed as EACH OTHER! HA! And the Gingerbread Man is dressed as the Elf on the Shelf! Every time he jumps up and sits on the mantle in the living room, I can’t help but giggle. (He’d better be careful, though. I hear he’s had some close calls around fire.)

Really, all the costumes are so creative! A few years ago, we had twenty-three Harry Potters and fifteen Hermiones, but so far this year, I haven’t seen any repeats!

What’s that? No, Vampire Boy doesn’t count, because technically, he’s not in a costume.

Anyway, I’ll let you mingle.

I’ll be hosting a spooky story hour in just a little while, and I have to go get into character. I can’t wait! I’m pulling my favorite spooky stories off The Little Crooked Bookshelf!

It’s going to be SPOOKTACULAR! See you soon!

Mr. Pig Live!

Hello, and welcome back to my talk show . . . Mr. Pig Live!

Today, we have not one, but TWO fabulous guests. They're the stars of Tea Party Rules, a delicious new picture book about a bear cub who discovers a backyard tea party . . . with cookies! But getting to eat them means playing by the hostess’s rules.

Let's give a warm Enchanted Woods welcome to . . .

THE GIRL AND CUB!

[APPLAUSE]

Welcome! What's your full name?
THE GIRL: I’m “the girl.”  This is “Cub.” He doesn’t say much. I can talk all day long. But not Cub. He—HEY! I saw you roll your eyes, Cub!

What three words best describe you?
THE GIRL: I am clean. I am neat. I am fancy. Cub is grubby. He is messy. (And just between you and me, he’s usually NAKED!)

Oh my. Here's a personal question. . . . Do you have a belly button?
THE GIRL: I do! Mine’s an innie! Cub’s is a fuzzy.

Fascinating! What is the best thing about being you?
THE GIRL: I have excellent fashion sense. (Cub is still working on his.)

What is the worst thing about being you?
THE GIRL: Um, sometimes I can be just a teensy bit… bossy. YOU STOP LAUGHING RIGHT NOW, CUB!

If you were stranded on a desert island, what would you bring?
THE GIRL: Just my tea set and my bathtub and my vanity table and my dress up trunk and COOKIES! And that’s—OW! Why’d you poke me, Cub?! Oh. And, Cub.

When do you feel the happiest?
THE GIRL: I’m happiest when Cub’s following the rules and—OW! I mean, I’m happiest when Cub and I compromise.

Would you rather be able to fly or be invisible?
THE GIRL: I would like to fly. Cub would like to be invisible. Like last week, when I made sparkly tiaras!

Poor Cub! Do you identify more with Goldilocks or the three bears?
THE GIRL: That girl—uh-oh. Ame’s calling me. You answer the rest, Cub!

Er, what a lovely pink dress you're wearing, Cub. So, what is your favorite word?
CUB: Cookies.

What is you least favorite word?
CUB: SorryCubWeAreOutOfCookies.

What is your favorite sound?
CUB: The oven timer. For the cookies.

What is your least favorite sound?
CUB: The hair dryer. (You don’t want to know.)

What is your special talent?
CUB: Sitting very still. And eating cookies. But not at the same time.

If you could dine with three characters from other books, who would they be?
CUB: The boy from IF YOU GIVE A MOUSE A COOKIE. And the duckling from THE DUCKLING GETS A COOKIE!? And the farmer from THE COW LOVES COOKIES.

I'm getting the sense that you like cookies. If you have a pocket, what is in it right now?
CUB: This tea party dress doesn’t have a pocket. But my princess costume does. (You don’t want to know.) There are cookie crumbs in it. I’m saving them for later.

What is your most embarrassing moment?
CUB: You can see this dress, right?

Oh, yes. What is your pet peeve?
CUB: Well, sometimes she—
THE GIRL: You’re still here, Mr. Pig? I forgot to hug Cub good-bye. There. See you tomorrow, Cub!
So, your pet peeve?
CUB: Know what? It doesn’t matter.

What was it like working with Ame Dyckman?
CUB: Working with Ame was fun! (But don’t leave her alone with your cookies!)

Thanks for the tip, Cub! And speaking of cookies, you've cleaned out the Cottage's cookie jar. It's a good thing our friend, Nina, has just arrived with our lunch.

Well, that's all the time we have for today. Thank you!

Tune in next time when I interview another exciting mystery guest. Hints: His name rhymes with Macaroni and he has a Crankee compadre.

About the Book
* "A bear cub sneaks into a girl’s tea party . . .—all with the intent to gobble up cookies—only to discover that he’s under the thumb of a mini Martha Stewart. . . . [Her] rules . . . stipulate that Cub must have his hair styled, wear a pink dress, and (the last straw) “eat daintily.” . . . [This] story is like a pretty petit four with an unexpectedly zingy filling—it’s evident from the sly look in the girl’s eyes that she’s not fooled one bit by Cub’s masquerade." --Publishers Weekly (starred review)

* "Strong storytelling, pacing, emotive illustrations that match the deceptive plot and an exuberant sense of fun make this little gem a winner." --Kirkus (starred review)

Nina packed our TEA PARTY RULES lunch with:
  • cucumber trees
  • forest mushrooms
  • a Cub cucumber-and-butter tea sandwich
  • a tiny bucket full of homemade sugar cookies
  • grape "candy" and sweet strawberries
