The Little Crooked Bookshelf

Is Your Buffalo Ready for Kindergarten?
by Audrey Vernick
illustrated by Daniel Jennewein

What it's all about...
Even a buffalo needs a solid education. This is the story of one brave buffalo that goes to kindergarten for the first time and learns all kinds of valuable lessons both in the classroom and on the playground.

Why it's on The Little Crooked Bookshelf...
Of course this book is funny because it has a backpack-wearing buffalo in it. But it’s more than funny. It’s a useful story that shows the reader what it feels like to be an outsider. I mean, this buffalo is a HUGE outsider.

Our favorite line(s)...
“Some people say kindergarten is no place for a buffalo. How crazy is that? Does your buffalo have a backpack? Well, then. He’s definitely ready for kindergarten!”

Our favorite illustration...

Why kids will love it...
It will help kids feel less afraid about being the new kid in school. The first day of anything is tough, but rooting for this buffalo is easy.

Why grown-ups will love it...
It’s smart and funny and really tries to imagine what a horned, one-ton, awkward-looking land mammal would face in kindergarten, finger paints and all. (And who hasn’t felt like that at least once in their life?)
