Loved to Pieces . . . with Peter H. Reynolds!

We are pleased to welcome Peter H. Reynolds, award-winning author-illustrator of The DotIsh, The North Star, and his latest picture book, The Smallest Gift of Christmas!

Peter's books delight and inspire readers of all ages -- so we were thrilled when he graciously agreed to share with us a couple of the books he loved to pieces as a child.

"One of the picture books I remember most from when I was very young was Tall Book of Make Believe, illustrated by Garth Williams -- it was so unusual, from its  long narrow shape to the spooky, dreamy feeling I got from it. I must have reread it 500 times.

Later on, I loved all the works of Roald Dahl, especially Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  I think Roald Dahl was the first adult I encountered who seemed to still be a kid. Plus I loved that in the book, Willie Wonka was looking for a kid to carry on his mission of not only running a candy factory, but also carrying the torch of imagination and creativity!"

Don't miss Peter's latest picture book The Smallest Gift of Christmas! Spare, free-spirited illustrations and heartwarming text make this be-careful what-you-wish-for story the perfect holiday gift.

Peter H. Reynolds was born in Canada with his twin brother, Paul, while their parents made a quick pit stop. That was only a temporary stop on this eccentric British family's world travels. Scotland, England, New Zealand, Argentina, Canada and finally the USA.

Peter and his twin grew up in a very British house in a New England town called Chelmsford. They were the only house in the neighborhood serving tea at 4. No basketball hoop in the driveway, instead a cricket bat and wicket. Dad Reynolds fixed the family car in suit and tie always puffing on his pipe. PBS kept them nourished on Monty Python and Masterpiece Theatre. All to say that Peter's early years were a bit odd, a tad quirky, a splosh wonderful, and were blessed with a good dollop of whimsy.

It makes sense then that Peter, pencil in six year old hand, began dashing out simple, whimsical, quirky art. He soon plied his art into newspaper he and his brother began in 2nd grade. Both he and Paul had an inexplicable desire to publish.

Peter's journey has been dedicated to helping kids, especially the "off the path" kids.  As Pete himself says, "I was one of them myself. Not every student is lucky enough to have a teacher, or adult, see his or her potential. When I visit students in schools they ask me what my hobbies are. I say thinking, dreaming. If my art and stories can help inspire others to do the same, I'll feel my life had meaning."

Today, Peter is the president and creative director of FableVision, an educational media development and publishing company, and co-founder of The Blue Bunny Books & Toys, in Dedham, MA, where he lives with his family. For more about Peter, visit his website at www.peterhreynolds.com.

Little Bookstores We Love: The Blue Bunny

Once a month, we send Mr. Pig out to learn more about our favorite independent bookstores. The Cottagers are a little obsessed with finding, visiting, supporting and celebrating independent book shops all over the world! Why? Because they are marvelous! And important. . . to authors, the community, and to the kids who can fold up on the floor of the children's section with their favorite books in their laps and get lost in a story.

This month, Mr. Pig spent some time chatting with the folks at THE BLUE BUNNY at 577 High Street in Dedham Square, Dedham, MA.

Q. How long has the store been open?
A. Since October 2003. (Our 10-year anniversary is next month!)

Q. How did The Blue Bunny get its name?
A. Our name is a nod to the antique crackle-glazed Dedham Pottery with the cobalt blue rabbit pattern that was made in Dedham between 1896 and 1943. For us, this signifies our place in a continuing commitment to the arts in our community.

Q. What's unique about your shop? Why is a favorite among your community?
A. Our shop is unique for a number of reasons, first and foremost being the home studio of author-illustrator Peter H. Reynolds, who not only owns the store, but is often on hand to talk and draw with, inspire, and sign books for fans from near and far.

Second, our store is a cozy refuge with a retro feel -- the building’s original tin ceilings, hardwood floors and wainscoted walls make our customers feel good. And third, we try hard to know our customers by name, give friendly advice and book suggestions, we always gift wrap for free, and we happily support and collaborate with schools, organizations and non-profits in the area. Parents of our youngest customers love our twice-weekly free storytimes too!

Oh, and we may be the only indie store that publishes a kids' creativity magazine too. Our HUTCH magazine comes out twice a year, filled with art, stories, and poems submitted to us by kids all over the world!

Q. Which children’s books and/or authors would you say are store favorites?
A. Peter H. Reynolds, Mo Willems, Oliver Jeffers, Todd Parr, Kevin Henkes, Amy Krouse Rosenthal, Jeff Kinney, Jarrett Krosoczka, Kimberly Newton Fusco, Fred Bowen, Roald Dahl, Kate DiCamillo, Shannon Hale, Suzanne Collins, John Green, Nancy Werlin, and many more! Authors are our "rock stars" -- we love 'em all!

Q. (Hey, we recognize that author!) What recent children’s book really made you laugh?
A. The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers, and A Big Guy Took My Ball by Mo Willems.

Q. Made you cry?
A. The Saturday Boy by David Fleming

Q. Finish this sentence: Everyone should support indie bookstores because. . .
A. Indie bookstores love and support you! Not only as bookseller, but counselor, advisor, donor, cultural center, babysitter, eye-opener, safe harbor, local employer, and very often, the heart of your community too!

We couldn't have said it better! Thank you!
