The Little Crooked Bookshelf

MONSTERGARTEN
by Daniel J. Mahoney
Illustrated by Jef Kaminsky

What it's all about . . .
Patrick, a monster, is worried about his first day of Monstergarten. His friend Kevin, also a monster, offers to help him prepare for his big day by teaching him how to be scarier. But will Patrick be scary enough?

Why it’s on the Crooked Bookshelf . . .
There are a lot of good books about the first day of school, but this is the first one we’ve read for monsters. It’s a fun approach on first-day-of-school fears.

Our favorite lines . . .
Patrick knew there were things that should come to him naturally. Like showing his claws, and growling. Flashing his fangs, and raising his arms.

Our favorite illustration . . .

Why kids will love it . . .
The pictures are bright and hilarious and they capture monsters doing what monsters do best: being scary!

Why grown-ups will love it . . .
It’s a very happy and bright book about what can be a very scary time: the first day of school. The monster parents give smart advice. It’s a genuine book that breaks down familiar fears.
