Hello Lighthouse
by Sophie Blackall

(This week's #ReviewsDay pick is from cottager Kara LaReau.)

What it's all about...
On the highest rock of a tiny island at the edge of the world stands a lighthouse, which withstands the elements and the passage of time as it beams its light out to sea. All the while, its keeper works and writes, and changes await.

Why I love it...
Being a New England gal, I have a thing for lighthouses, and Sophie Blackall's latest masterpiece is the ultimate tribute.

Sample illustration...

What's the kid-appeal?
Fascinating illustrations and a detailed narrative reveal the inner workings of the lighthouse and the ins and outs of its keeper's daily life.

What's the grownup appeal?
Like a certain lighthouse, this story's classic, comforting feel offers a steadfast refuge and a happy, hopeful beacon.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR A TREEHOUSE
by Carter Higgins
Illustrated by Emily Hughes

(This week’s #ReviewsDay pick is from cottager Jamie Michalak.)

What it’s all about …

This beautifully illustrated story gives whimsical instructions on how to build a treehouse and what to do once you have.

Why I love it …
This book had me at "treehouse." But then it went and included ALL KINDS OF TREEHOUSES! Like garden treehouses and pirate ship treehouses and high-up-in-the-sky treehouses and (gasp) library treehouses!

Favorite lines ...

You can spill secrets and

whispers in a treehouse

cause the wind keeps them

snug with a rustle

which is a hush you can feel

in your bones

that's how you know it's safe.

Sample illustration …
From WHAT YOU NEED FOR A TREEHOUSE by Carter Higgins. Illustration copyright 2018 by Emily Hughes.

Why will kids love it?

Kids can imagine trying out the different treehouses and choosing their favorite.

Why will grown-ups love it?
Treehouses are for everyone. Even grown-ups dream about escaping the real world and creating a space all their own. Also, some might enjoy how this book calls to mind Andrew Henry's Meadow and the art of Gyo Fujikawa.

What it's all about...
At first, Tilly thinks Tank is an elephant. Tank thinks Tilly is a tank. After a series of BOOM-ing encounters, the two embark on a blooming friendship.

Why I love it...
I LOVE Jay Fleck's artwork, and my little one loves elephants, so this was a no-brainer — plus, the themes of peace and friendship here are universal and timely.

Lines
by Suzy Lee

(This week's #ReviewsDay pick is from cottager Jamie Michalak.)

What it's all about...

It starts with a line -- a tip of a pencil and a blade of a skate. At first, this seems to be a simple wordless picture book about an ice skater. But then the real and imagined blur to create magic!

Why I love it...

The art! Whoa. Exquisite. You'll wonder if the pages are made of ice.

Sample illustration...

From LINES. Illustration copyright 2017 by Suzy Lee. Published by Chronicle Books.

What's the kid-appeal?

They'll gasp at the surprising turn the story takes when the skater falls, and -- well, I don't want to give too much away. But they won't see it coming.

What's the grownup appeal?

ELF IN THE HOUSE
by Ammi-Joan Paquette
illustrated by Adam Record

(This week's #ReviewsDay pick is from cottager Anika Denise.)

What it's all about...
On a snowy Christmas Eve, a little girl tip-toes from her bed to find some surprise friends in her house, including a mouse, an elf, and even the big jolly guy himself.

Why I love it...
Paquette's first book in the series, Ghost in the House, is a perennial Halloween favorite my youngest daughter loves. I purchased the new one at a signing I did with Joan back in October. I plan to wrap it up and give it to my daughter on Christmas Eve. She'll no doubt recognize and appreciate the bouncy rhymes and adorable illustrations that echo the first book.

My favorite lines...
And the ELF goes third
on this snowy Christmas Eve,
In a line dance of jingle-bell hop!
Festive friends in a row,
Down the hall they go,
Until suddenly they hear. . .
CLIP-CLOP!

My favorite illustrations...

What's the kid-appeal?
The best part of Christmas Eve for those that celebrate is often the anticipation! Elf in the House will ramp up holiday cheer in the countdown to Christmas.

What's the grownup appeal?
Just like the first, this book is simple, sweet, and fun to read aloud. It's the perfect book to tuck  between leaving cookies out for Santa, and that goodnight, see-you-on-Christmas-morning kiss.

SMOOT: A Rebellious Shadow
by Michelle Cuevas, illustrated by Sydney Smith

(This week's #ReviewsDay pick is from cottager Kara LaReau.)

What it's all about...
As a shadow to a boy with a "yawn-colored" life, Smoot yearns for "sky blue-colored freedom." Then, one day, with a *pop*, he breaks free, and his adventure begins!

Why I love it...
I can't resist a book with "rebellious" in the title, especially this inspiring tale by Michelle Cuevas, with lovely, lively illustrations by Sydney Smith.

Favorite lines...
Other shadows watched Smoot.
The sight made them brave.
"If he can follow his dreams, we can too."

TWINDERELLA, A FRACTIONED FAIRY TALE
by Corey Rosen Schwartz
pictures by Deborah Marcero

(This week's #ReviewsDay pick is from cottager Anika Denise.)

What it's all about...
Think you know the true story of Cinderella? Guess what, you don't know the half of it! Turns out Cinderella has a twin sister, Tinderella, who splits the chores.

Why I love it...
In signature Corey Rosen Schwartz style, this fractured "fractioned" fairy tale delivers irresistible wordplay, plenty of girl power, and a unique twist on a beloved classic. Deborah Marcero's charming mixed-media illustrations are perfect for the story.

My favorite lines...
They'd each do:

Half the folding,
half the mending,
Half the mean
stepsister tending.

My favorite illustrations...

What's the kid-appeal?

the scariest book ever
by bob shea

(This week's #ReviewsDay pick is from cottager Kara LaReau.)

What it's all about...
A reluctant little ghost encourages readers to go ahead into the "spooky" forest, where it turns out an adorable bunny is hosting a costume party.

Why I love it...
Bob Shea's artwork is as bright, graphic, and inviting as ever, and the funny interactive narrative is scary-good.

Favorite lines...

You can stay here and help me with the haunted housework. We'll tell spooky stories and clean the bathroom.

That's scary, right?
