The Little Crooked Bookshelf

The Dark
by Lemony Snicket
illustrated by Jon Klassen

What it's all about...
Laszlo is afraid of the dark. Mostly, the dark spends its time in the basement. But at night, the dark seems to be everywhere. Laszlo hopes the dark will stay away from him, but when his nightlight goes out, he receives a special visitor . . . and comes to see the dark in a new light.

Why it's on The Little Crooked Bookshelf...
Um . . . text by Lemony Snicket and art by Jon Klassen? Talk about a dream team! And it’s a brilliant, fresh treatment of a familiar theme.

Our favorite line(s)...
“The voice of the dark was as creaky/as the roof of the house, and as smooth and/cold as the windows, and even though the dark/was right next to Laszlo, the/voice seemed very far away.”

Our favorite illustration...

Why kids will love it...
The dark is more mysterious than truly scary here, and it turns out it’s not only harmless — it’s also pretty helpful! Kids (of all ages) who might be afraid of the dark will be entertained, comforted, and, dare we say, enlightened.

Why grown-ups will love it...
A great way to address nighttime fears, and the text and art are perfectly matched. Klassen’s use of whitespace (in this case, blackspace) is particularly inspired. And hey, some of us big kids are afraid of the dark, too!
