The Little Crooked Bookshelf (with a Giveaway!)

The Wig in the Window
by Kristen Kittscher

What it's all about . . .
Best friends and seventh graders Sophie Young and Grace Yang have made a game out of spying on their neighbors. On one of their midnight stakeouts, they witness a terrifying, bloody scene at the home of their bizarre middle-school counselor Dr. Charlotte Agford (also known as Dr. Awkward). At least, they think they do. Sophie and Grace become convinced that she’s hiding something—and they’re determined to find out what it is.

Why it's on The Little Crooked Bookshelf . . .
Debut author Kristen Kittscher had us at “midnight spy stakeouts!” And she delivers with a fast-paced, funny mystery full of twists and turns that kept us on the edge of our seat. But The Wig in the Window is also a story with depth. It explores middle-grade friendship, self-discovery, perception, cultural identity, and stereotypes.

Our favorite line . . .
"'At one point she went after the school librarian. The librarian! Could there be a more noble soul?'"

Why kids will love it . . .
The Wig in the Window is a suspenseful mystery that’s populated by colorful characters, both realistic and slightly over-the top. Sophie and Grace are an irresistible team; Grace’s new friend, Tracy, is a breath of fresh air; and Sophie’s Grandpa, a flatulent veteran, is hilarious.

Why grown-ups will love it . . .
Fans of Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Harriet the Spy, and The Westing Game will wish that this book was around when they were younger.
